Health Benefits of Compassion

Compassion is our way of bringing love and forgiveness into action. We understand that a person acting with anger or violence is acting from a place of personal pain and trauma. That person is acting against his or her true nature of peace and is actually hurting him- or herself first. We have all experienced trauma in our lives to various degrees, either as victims of our own actions or through those of others. When trauma goes unprocessed, emotions persist and are stored away in neuropeptides, which are created in the brain then attached to cells via surface receptors.

When you practice compassion regularly by sitting with its experience in meditation or by thinking about it and allowing the heart to feel it for yourself and all beings then the heart becomes coherent with the limbic system of the brain. Oxytocin and dopamine are released, and these neuropeptides give you feelings of love, trust, calmness and self-worth. Add kindness to your contemplation and feel a surge in serotonin that brings joy and happiness. Bliss out with these positive feelings nurturing every cell and organ of your body. These thoughts massage the genes of your DNA to upregulate health and wellness. It all begins with a thought.

Through the words of Deepak Chopra, ‘Be careful of what you are thinking because every cell of your body is listening’.

Take care
